A fire that struck a row of popular bars and restaurants near the heart of Downtown Salt Lake City on Monday night swept through the businesses and destroyed much of the block known as Whiskey Street, Building Salt Lake photos show.

Firefighters said that the bars London Belle, White Horse and Whiskey Street as well as the restaurant Los Tapatios were completely destroyed by the fire, which prompted a massive response to the area between 300 South and 400 South on Main Street.

Photos obtained by Building Salt Lake show the row of buildings were completely destroyed.

The bar Whiskey Street gets its name from the history of Salt Lake City when miners and other newcomers would drink at the saloons that lined the street several blocks south of Temple Square. (Brigham Young was quoted in a Deseret News story from September 1871 that he stopped walking down Whiskey Street in 1859.)

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
