The treatment and therapy center The Other Side Academy is asking for Salt Lake City’s permission to build a new multifamily building in Central City as part of its broader buildout that includes The Other Side Village on the west side.

In a new filing, the group has released plans to build a 32-unit housing facility where it would train people before they move to the community of hundreds of tiny homes on the city’s west side.

“The intent of the Academy’s expanded program is to prepare and train vagrant individuals for relocation to the tiny home village on the west side of the city,” TOSA wrote in the conditional use filing.

The group, which acts as a community-based alternative to incarceration or homelessness, also plans to retrofit a former LDS meetinghouse at 630 E. 100 S. for educational and training services.

“This will include classrooms, kitchen and dining, recreation, and offices,” the group wrote.

The meetinghouse that’s being retrofitted sits kitty corner across 100 South from The Other Side Academy’s original Salt Lake City location.

The new use would be considered an Adult Daycare, which is a conditional use within Salt Lake City’s RMF-45 zoning.

The new multifamily building will include 28 two-bedroom units and four one-bedroom units. The building would be set to the southeast of the existing meetinghouse and accessed off 100 South.

“This project is unique in that the vast majority of the occupants of The Other Side Academy program do not have vehicles since they are generally living on the street without resources to own and maintain vehicles,” the TOSA team wrote. “Most of the vehicles on the site will be used by staff who run the program housed primarily in the existing meetinghouse building.”

The Other Side Village has been in the works for years, though none of the hundreds of expected tiny homes has been built due to environmental issues on the former landfill.

The Other Side has been expanding its presence in the city in recent years, including adding a successful moving company, thrift store and more.
