A new retail space is open for lease in Salt Lake City’s popular 9th & 9th business district, and several more changes are on the way.
Less than four years after the city rejected an attempt to turn a retail space into a wine bar, a boutique at 1058 E. 900 S. hit the market for rent last week for $33.48 per square foot.
The 1,600-square-foot unit includes 800 square feet on the main level and 800 feet below.
The owners of Uinta Brewing tried in 2022 to turn the space into a wine bar. But they ran into issues with the restrictive zoning in the area, which runs from roughly 850 E. to 950 E. along the south side of 900 South and slightly further along the north side.
The space has been a clothing boutique for several years but is again on the market.
“Well suited for boutique retail, specialty food or beverage concepts, fitness/studio, or experiential pop-ups,” according to the listing.
Knoops chocolate on the way
At 900 South, a space that was home to a cereal bar appears on its way to becoming a chocolatier shop.
After the closure of Spilt Milk, the building’s that’s home to Vessel Kitchen will make way for a chocolate drink space at 905 E. 900 S.
Knoops, a London-based chocolate cafe chain, will open what appears to be its first U.S. location in the building this spring. The location will be one of about two-dozen.
“Knoops brings the accessible luxury of fine chocolate to your high street and your home with expertly crafted, gourmet chocolate drinks,” the business says.
Woodman seeing strong interest
After the closure of the Barbacoa Mexican Grill in the Woodman Building at 859 E. 900 S., the broker assigned with finding the next tenant told BSL he’s seeing strong interest in renting out the space.
“I think we’re up to 10 offers,” Windermere’s Peter Clark said earlier last month.
Barbacoa abruptly shut down after 20 years in the neighborhood late last year.
Smith’s retail on the way
Just north of the main strip, Smith’s grocery store is wrapping up the external buildout of three new retail spots within the parking lot of its store at 876 E. 800 S.
It’s still not clear what might fill the new retail spaces, and Smith’s didn’t respond to requests for comment.
